United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala is facing potential expulsion from his position following a petition seeking his removal.
The petition, filed by Joseph Kalende Wabwire on Wednesday, 5 June, accuses Malala of several infractions, including interference with grassroots elections.
Wabwire, who identifies himself as a founding member of the UDA, detailed his grievances in a four-page document. He accused Malala of defying party leadership and creating divisions within the party.
The petitioner outlined seven key reasons for Malala’s removal: embezzlement of party funds, violation of the UDA constitution, and concerns over Malala’s character and educational background.
“As UDA founders, we shall strive to remind our members where we came from, why we formed this party, and where we intend to go. This is why it is sometimes, such as it is now, important to remind us of the history of the UDA Party,” the petition stated.
The document further warned against any actions that might derail the party’s objectives and suggested the need for leadership and orientation training for new officials to maintain the party’s integrity.
Malala, appointed Secretary General in February 2023, has recently been embroiled in political controversies.
In late May, he issued a stern warning to Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba over political rhetoric that suggested Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was being sidelined by the UDA and had fallen out with President William Ruto.
In his warning, Malala highlighted a growing trend of indiscipline within the party, stating, “Your recent conduct not only undermines the party’s unity but also disrespects the leadership that you pledged to serve.
“Let this be a stern warning: desist from such actions with immediate effect. Should this behaviour persist, the party will take disciplinary action against you.”
