National Dialogue Committee Releases Plans Incase Agreements on Proposals Fall Apart

It is now emerging that yesterday’s agreement by the National Dialogue Committee does not necessarily mean that all the issues both sides have raised will be worked on.

Azimio’s major proposals include an audit of last year’s presidential election results and a look into the high cost of living issue, as the ruling side pushes for among others, creation of Opposition Leader’s office.

Yesterday’s agreement showed that all these will be considered in the deliberations, but fresh details indicate that this does not necessarily mean that they will be done as demanded by the two sides.

Daily Nation reports that the two sides have agreed that there will be agreements and disagreements on the proposals, and both will be presented to the parliament after 60 days of the talks.

The agreement also indicates that some issues might be taken to coalition leaders; President William Ruto and Azimio chief Raila Odinga, if the committee finds it hard dealing with them.

“The final report and proposals of the committee shall be submitted to the respective coalition leaders. In addition, the final report and proposals of the committee shall be presented to the Leader of the Majority Party and Leader of Minority Party of each house of parliament,” the agreement reads in part, as was reported by Daily Nation on Thursday.

Other proposals include creation of the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s office.

This is as the talks that began after Raila agreed to withdraw his supporters from the streets finally appear to be picking pace.

But they have been facing opposition from some forces allied to Ruto, specifically Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has dismissed them as pointless and unlikely to achieve anything.
