East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election, announcing that she plans to pursue the position alongside young people.
Winnie made the announcement on Wednesday, October 15, during the first anniversary commemoration of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.
Addressing the gathering, Winnie referred to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who was among those present at the event, as she spoke about her political ambitions and plans for the next election.
She said Sifuna’s presence had given her a reason to address growing questions about her political future, making it clear that she was ready to enter the race for the Nairobi Senate seat.
“I have seen that there is a visitor here from Nairobi; his name is Sifuna,” Winnie told the crowd.
She went on to explain that her decision to seek the seat was linked to Sifuna’s pursuit of higher political office.
“Let it not be a rumour that as Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see there is a space. That is why I will stand for the senator of Nairobi,” she declared.
Her announcement places her among the political figures expected to shape the contest for Nairobi’s Senate seat as aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Winnie currently represents Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly, a regional legislative body serving the East African Community. A move to the Senate would mark a shift from regional representation to elective politics at the national level.
The EALA legislator also made it clear that she intends to involve young people in her political journey, presenting her ambition as one she hopes to pursue with their support.
“Lakini siendi pekee yangu, I am going with young people,” she said.
She later challenged the audience to join her, asking, “Are you ready to walk with me?” Her remarks were met with cheers from the crowd.
Her decision comes at a time when Sifuna’s political future has attracted attention following his declaration that he intends to run for president in 2027.
Sifuna currently represents Nairobi in the Senate, and Winnie’s announcement signals a potential contest for the seat if both political developments proceed as stated.
The declaration came during a gathering attended by Raila’s family members, political allies and supporters who had assembled to mark one year since his death.
The anniversary provided an opportunity for those present to remember the former Prime Minister, whose influence continues to feature in political discussions, while Winnie used the occasion to publicly outline her own political plans.
