A wave of excitement is building in Kenya as a unique amateur boxing match between two viral figures continues to capture public attention. The upcoming fight between ‘Majembe’ and ‘Mbavu the Destroyer’ has grown from online entertainment into a widely discussed sporting event, attracting support from leaders, entertainers, and fans across the country.
The bout is set to take place in Nairobi on April 4, 2026, though the exact venue is yet to be confirmed by organizers.
During a recent meeting with Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, widely known as Jalang’o, President William Ruto shared his support for the two fighters and announced financial backing ahead of the event.
After being briefed about the match and its popularity on social media, the President made a surprise pledge that added to the growing interest around the fight.
“This Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer, I wish them well,” said Ruto with a smile. “Let them do their thing, and I will place one million for Majembe and one million for Mbavu.” He also promised to sponsor tickets for 2,000 Kenyan fans, with equal allocations for supporters of both fighters, giving more people a chance to attend the highly anticipated showdown.
The match is being organized by comedian and media personality Oga Obinna, who first turned the online rivalry into a real boxing contest. What began as playful online challenges quickly gained traction, especially after Majembe’s boxing videos on TikTok went viral in late 2025.
His clips, where he displayed his skills while asking for challengers, sparked interest among other content creators. Mbavu the Destroyer later accepted the challenge, leading to the planned fight that now draws nationwide attention.
Several well known personalities have joined in supporting the event and the fighters. Oga Obinna had earlier pledged a Ksh 1 million prize for the winner. Businessman Oketch Salah contributed Ksh200,000 to support both participants and boost the prize pool. Jalang’o publicly declared his support for Mbavu the Destroyer, while rapper Khaligraph Jones chose to back Majembe.
Nairobi’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, also offered to help train one of the fighters as they prepare for the match.
Jalang’o welcomed the President’s involvement and praised the growing unity among fans and sponsors. During their interaction, both shared the popular phrase linked to the fight, “weka mawe,” which has become widely recognized among followers of the event.
Organizers are expected to release more details about the venue and final arrangements in the coming weeks, as the match promises to be a lively gathering for fans of amateur boxing and online entertainment alike.
