Azimio – One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga is rumoured to snub the presidential debate slotted on Tuesday, 26th July, 2022 at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
Speaking during Azimio – One Kenya rally in Kitale, Bungoma, the coalition’s secretary – general Junet Mohamed hinted that Raila is not compelled to participate in the long awaited presidential debate.
According to Junet Mohamed, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance shouldn’t dictate the type of questions they ought to be asked.
“Raila Odinga is not compelled to participate in the presidential debate. He might even snub that debate. Our competitors have no mandate to decide on the type of the questions they want to be asked. They can’t lecture the moderators on what they want to be asked” said Junet Mohamed.
On Thursday, 21st July, Deputy President William Ruto’s communication aide Hussein Mohammed confirmed that Ruto will attend the debate.
However, he insisted that the moderators ought to anchor the debate on matters that affect millions of Kenyans rather than discussing personalities, political relationships among other irrelevant topics.
“If the debate will last two or three hours, that’s even better. We can even do ten hours provided that the moderators focus on key issues facing Kenyans. It would be pointless to attend the debate if it will major on non-issues,” Hussein Mohamed said on Thursday, July 21 during a press conference at the UDA Command Center in Westlands, Nairobi.
Ruto is scheduled to face off Raila in a two tier debate while The Roots Party presidential candidate George Luchiri Wajackoyah battle out with The Agano Party’s David Waihiga Mwaure.
Wajackoyah has threatened to ski the debate arguing that he wanted the four candidates to share a podium at once rather dividing the debate into two sessions.
He insisted that he won’t appear for the debate if he will be tied with Waihiga Mwaure.
