There will be no protests or demonstrations in the country henceforth, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has announced.

Kindiki says that violence will never be allowed to take root in the country, in reference to violent protests Azimio boss Raila Odinga has been calling.

Kindiki says that whether or not Raila and President William Ruto agree, there will be no protests in the country and peace must prevail.

The powerful minister has said that the plan is to ensure that people carry on with their businesses and property is not destroyed despite political fights and disagreements.

“Should the leaders agree or disagree on any issue, no one will be allowed to terrorise or blackmail the people of Kenya through violence and destruction of public and private properties,” the former Tharaka Nithi Senator is quoted by The Star.

He made the remarks during a church service at Abundant New Life Church in Nyeri, at a time when Raila has called off the protests, for the second time, to give room for talks with Ruto’s side.

Kindiki stated that promoting peace is the responsibility of every Kenyan, despite their political or religious stands and beliefs.

“The peace and tranquillity of our country is a singular and collective responsibility for all citizens, their political, religious, or community differences notwithstanding. We must remove violence from the equation of the politics of our country,” he said.

His remarks come at a time when Raila has announced September 1 as the starting date of the next phase of demos in the event the ongoing talks do not yield the results he is looking for.

But he has also said that things will be different this time round, announcing that the demos will be held by staying at home and not protesting in the streets.
