A cloud of grief has engulfed the police fraternity in Kisii after a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer was found dead inside a communication room at Kisii Central Police Station in an incident that has left colleagues and residents searching for answers.

The officer, identified as Corporal Bosibori, was discovered on Tuesday morning after reportedly locking herself inside the station’s radio communication room.

According to preliminary police reports, she sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, with investigators treating the case as an apparent suicide pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The heartbreaking discovery was made after fellow officers became concerned when they could not locate her.

Earlier, Corporal Bosibori had been working alongside colleagues during the night shift as part of her normal duties in the communications department at the DCI offices based within Kisii Central Police Station.

According to Kisii OCPD Musa Imamai, the officer briefly excused herself while on duty but never returned, prompting concern among her colleagues.

At first, they assumed she was attending to another assignment within the station. However, as time passed and she remained missing, officers began searching for her.

The search ended in tragedy on Tuesday morning when a colleague attempted to access the radio communication room. After gaining entry, the officer found Corporal Bosibori seated on the floor.

A police-issued firearm was recovered near her body, leading investigators to believe that the fatal gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted.

Speaking after the incident, OCPD Imamai expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Corporal Bosibori as a committed and hardworking officer who had never displayed any obvious signs of emotional distress while carrying out her duties.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss. She was an active officer who never showed any signs of distress,” Imamai said.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the station, where fellow officers struggled to come to terms with the sudden death of a colleague many described as disciplined, professional and dedicated to her work.

Residents who learnt of the tragedy also expressed disbelief, noting the immense pressure that law enforcement officers often face while serving the public.

Police have since launched comprehensive investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Detectives are expected to interview colleagues, review events leading up to the tragedy and await findings from a postmortem examination as part of the inquiry.

The unfortunate incident has also reignited conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing among security officers. Experts have repeatedly emphasised the importance of counselling services and regular psychological support for officers working in high-pressure environments, where exposure to traumatic situations can silently take a toll.

Family members, friends and colleagues are mourning the loss of Corporal Bosibori while hoping that the inquiry will provide clarity on the events that led to her untimely death.
