Answers are now out on why President William Ruto has been appearing to have a special interest in the Luo Nyanza region since his takeover in September.
The President has been seen taking a number of goodies there, a region that rejected him and largely voted for his opponent Raila Odinga in August.
But he has already made a number of development pledges for the region, some of which are expected to gobble up to billions of shillings.
The Standard has established why Ruto is even taking relief food there, despite the fact that it is not affected by the drought being felt in other areas.
The paper reports that this is part of his larger plan to woo it and possibly take it from Raila, who commands massive support there.
The relief food distribution has for two days been ongoing in Nyanza, under the leadership of ICT CS Eliud Owalo, a native of the lakeside region.
“President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government will serve all Kenyans without discrimination,” he said while leading another such exercise in Suba.
Ruto’s Nyanza projects
The projects set for the region include the Sh1 billion Kabonyo Fisheries Aquaculture and Training Centre and affordable housing projects in Homa Bay.
“It is unfortunate that fish produced in Lake Victoria is processed elsewhere,” Owalo, a former ally of Raila, said while confirming the plans.
Ruto has also considered the region in his recent appointments, going as far as giving the powerful Interior PS to Raymond Omollo, a son of the region.
