Fafi MP Salah Yakub has revealed that preparations are ongoing to amend the constitutional clause capping presidential terms at only two.
He says that this is ongoing despite denials by the ruling UDA party, which has publicly disowned him for revealing it’s plan to do away with the term limit.
The lawmaker claims that he will be vindicated soon, when the debate lands in parliament, and this is when Kenyans will know that he isn’t just making claims.
He told The Standard that while he doesn’t speak on behalf of UDA, he was just saying what’s going on, and he doesn’t expect it to admit it, at least for now.
“Of course, the party cannot say that is the official position but it is the truth. I was speaking in my personal position as MP. Just wait for it, the debate will come to Parliament,” the lawmaker is quoted.
He made the remarks after public disownment by the UDA leadership, whose Chair Johnson Muthama said harbours no plans to alter the constitutional clause.
Leaders allied to the party have also ganged up against him, noting that they will not support the amendment even if it were to be tabled in the house.
Among them is Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, who said that he is not aware about anything of the sort.
“I sit in the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly. I am also UDA secretary of legal affairs committee and I can confirm without an iota of doubt that we have no such plans,” he said.
