Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has called for unity among Opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying a strong and united front will be necessary to defeat President William Ruto.

Speaking during the funeral of Ann Nyatoro Ndung’u, the mother of East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Kanini Kega, Gachagua urged Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi faction to work together with other Opposition leaders as the country moves closer to the next election.

Gachagua said young leaders like Sifuna have a strong influence across the country and should be protected because Kenya still needs them.

He advised the Nairobi Senator to avoid traveling around the country using helicopters, claiming that the government could use extreme methods to silence leaders who challenge it.

He said Sifuna should consider using road transport instead, just like the rest of them, adding that even though they can afford to buy helicopters, the country needs leaders who are alive and safe. He also said leaders have families who depend on them and should be careful.

According to Gachagua, the Opposition must remain focused and avoid distractions if they want to remove President Ruto from office in 2027. He stressed that unity among leaders would be more important than personal differences or past political disagreements.

The former Deputy President also turned his attention to leaders from the Mt Kenya region, saying he would take firm action against those he described as betrayers of the community after returning from his planned trip to London.

He accused some leaders of siding with people who were working against the interests of the region and said voters should reject them at the ballot.

He warned that leaders who support actions that hurt the people of Mt Kenya should not be trusted again, saying the community must protect its political future by voting wisely.

In his remarks, Senator Sifuna agreed with Gachagua’s message on unity. He said the only way to win the 2027 presidential election would be for all Opposition leaders to come together under one ticket.

Sifuna said there was no other workable formula apart from unity, adding that if forgiveness and compromise were needed to achieve that goal, then leaders should be ready to do so for the sake of the country and the people.
