Kalonzo Musyoka finds himself at a turning point that could either revive his national political ambitions or end them altogether. As momentum builds around the formation of a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, Kalonzo’s name keeps coming up as a central figure in the talks. This isn’t surprising he has been a key player in opposition politics for years and has consistently shown loyalty in coalition arrangements. But that loyalty has often come at a personal cost, especially when looking back at what happened in 2013 and 2017.

In both of those elections, Kalonzo stood firmly behind Raila Odinga as his running mate under different alliances. Despite his consistent support and sacrifice, he was left out in the cold once the dust settled. Key government positions were shared among others while he watched from the sidelines. That history has not only frustrated his supporters but has also raised serious questions about whether he should risk joining another alliance that might exploit his influence and leave him empty-handed again.

As discussions around a new coalition take shape, Kalonzo is expected to play a more assertive and central role. Political observers believe this is the best opportunity he has had to position himself as a serious presidential contender.

But there are still deep concerns that he could be used once more to build momentum and then be dropped when it matters most. This is why many within his circle are urging him to secure written agreements and clear terms before entering into any political arrangement. They are warning him not to fall into the same trap of relying on promises and handshakes that have failed him before.

So far, Kalonzo has shown signs of a different approach. He has publicly declared that he is ready to lead and will not settle for a secondary role in future political deals. This shift in tone has earned him respect from many who believe the opposition needs a new face with experience and a clean record. However, the opposition itself remains fragile. Personal ambitions and mistrust continue to threaten any attempts at unity. For Kalonzo to succeed, he must strike a delicate balance between pushing his own agenda and building a stable coalition that can challenge the current regime.

Rebuilding trust with the public is another mountain he must climb. Many Kenyans have watched opposition alliances form and collapse without delivering change. If Kalonzo can rise above the mistrust and bring genuine unity, he could finally emerge as the main challenger in 2027.

But if he repeats the same political missteps, it could mark the end of his long journey in national politics. What he does next will not only determine his future but could also shape the direction of Kenya’s opposition politics for years to come.
