Businessman Francis Mburu Mungai, a central figure in the controversial Ruaraka land saga, passed away on the morning of Thursday, February 20, 2025, at his residence in Karen, Nairobi.

According to blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, Mburu, whose dealings have been the subject of extensive legal and public scrutiny since 2019, leaves behind a complex legacy intertwined with one of Kenya’s most debated land disputes.

The Ruaraka land scandal revolves around the ownership and compensation claims of a 13.5-acre parcel housing Ruaraka High School and Drive Inn Primary School.

Mburu, through his companies Afrison Export Import Limited and Huelands Limited, asserted ownership of this land, leading to a government payout of Ksh.1.5 billion as part of a compulsory acquisition process.

This transaction sparked public outcry and investigations, especially after revelations that the land was public property, as determined by a three-judge bench of the Environment and Land Court in 2019.

Further complicating the matter, allegations emerged that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i was involved in the irregular land acquisition.

In 2023, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji confirmed that Matiang’i was under investigation concerning the Ksh.1.5 billion Ruaraka land scandal, with decisions pending based on ongoing financial investigations.

Mburu’s Karen home was subjected to raids by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in 2018 as part of the broader investigation into the scandal.

These actions underscored the gravity of the allegations and the government’s commitment to addressing corruption within its ranks.

Despite the legal battles and public scrutiny, Mburu maintained his claim over the Ruaraka land until his demise.

As the nation reflects on Mburu’s passing, questions linger regarding the resolution of the Ruaraka land saga and the broader implications for land ownership disputes in Kenya.
