The Standard has this evening reported that Mathira Member of Parliament Hon Eric Wamumbi, one of the few Mt Kenya MPs who had openly backed the motion to impeach former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has now joined a growing group of MPs opposing the possible removal of Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa from the cabinet.

According to The Standard, Eric Wamumbi has boldly come out to declare that he, along with other MPs such as Nimrod Mbai and John Paul Mwirigi, will not sit idly by and watch as Mugaa becomes a target for political elimination.

Wamumbi emphasised the importance of unity in ensuring the continued service of capable leaders like Mugaa, whose work is already creating tangible benefits for the region.

The development comes in the midst of speculations surrounding a looming cabinet reshuffle, which reports suggest might see former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi replace Eric Mugaa as the Water CS.

These reports have sparked heated debates, with opinions divided on whether such a move would be politically and developmentally beneficial.

John Paul Mwirigi, Igembe South MP, has strongly defended Mugaa against those opposing him, arguing that the CS’s critics are primarily motivated by fear of his potential political influence in Meru County.

“Those fighting him know in a year he will be the person calling the shots in Meru, because of his development record,” Mwirigi stated, highlighting Mugaa’s impressive work and growing popularity.

The debate over Mugaa’s position underscores the broader political undercurrents shaping the Mt Kenya region as leaders jostle for influence and alignment ahead of potential political realignments in the near future.

For now, MPs like Wamumbi, Mbai, and Mwirigi remain steadfast in their support of Mugaa, setting the stage for an intense political showdown.
