Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s name has resurfaced in the ongoing political discourse, fueling fresh allegations regarding his stance during the 2022 general elections and his perceived role in the current political dynamics.

As political leaders realign in what some are calling a broad-based government formation, Uhuru’s name is being mentioned by both allies and opponents in ways that have sparked controversy and debate.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni have strongly refuted claims that Uhuru Kenyatta has endorsed the idea of politicians aligning with President William Ruto’s government.

Speaking at a gathering in Embu, Musyoka issued a stern warning to those invoking Uhuru’s name in their bid to justify joining the ruling coalition. He clarified that Uhuru has had no conversations with those who claim he encouraged them to support Ruto.

“Uhuru Kenyatta had made it clear during the 2022 elections that the Mt Kenya region should not support Ruto, foreseeing the challenges that have since unfolded. It is therefore misleading to suggest that he is now advising anyone to join the UDA-led government,” Kioni emphasized.

The Jubilee Secretary-General went further, insisting that the former Head of State remains opposed to the current administration’s policies and actions.

“Uhuru has not instructed any of us to join a government he deems unconstitutional. His stance remains unchanged, and those attempting to use his name for political gain are doing so without his consent,” Kioni declared.

Kalonzo Musyoka, leading the opposition under the Azimio la Umoja coalition, reiterated their commitment to remaining the “government in waiting.”

He assured their supporters that they would continue to play a crucial role in holding the Ruto administration accountable.

“We are determined to be a strong opposition, providing an alternative to the current regime. As we move forward, more Kenyans will join us in this movement for real change,” Musyoka stated.

He also emphasized that the opposition’s focus is on maintaining integrity and honesty in politics, values he claimed were instilled by the late President Mwai Kibaki.

The ongoing debates around Uhuru’s involvement reflect the deep divisions and uncertainties in Kenya’s political landscape, as leaders continue to navigate the aftermath of the contentious 2022 elections and the evolving alliances within the government and opposition.
