Retired Muranga Senator Kembi Gitura is set to work with the presidential candidate of Azimio la Umoja, Raila Odinga. The Former Murang’a Senator Kembi Gitura is said to be a politician who knows his stuff to an extent that whenever you dismiss him, he reinvents himself and returns even more powerful.

As the clock ticks down to the general election on August 9, Gitura is now a front-runner for the Murang’a Senator seat, with incumbent Irungu Kangata in the campaign for Governor. Dr Kangata deposed Gitura in 2017 after he had lost the Jubilee Party nominations. When President Uhuru Kenyatta chose him as the chairperson of the KEMSA board, he gave us him an easy landing.

Despite his bitter departure from the corruption-plagued agency, he was granted a second chance when he was appointed board chairman of the Communication Authority of Kenya.

He returned to politics in 2013, following a five-year sabbatical, when he won the Murang’a Senator seat on a TNA ticket. He was chosen Deputy Speaker of the Senate. This boosted his status in the “Upper House” of the country.

After losing his Kiharu MP seat in the 2007 general election, he served as Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union. Gitura served as Agriculture assistant minister during his first term in Parliament which began in 2002, before being transferred to the foreign affairs docket in the same capacity.

The 69-year-old lawyer, who is now a major part of Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s campaign team in Mount Kenya has become a guy to watch. He still wants to prove that he is not a pushover in Murang’a politics despite having spent the last five years in the cold.

Chances are very high that he might take his first step into politics and still challenge his competitors to grab this powerful post in Murang’a county.‌
