Simon Mbugua is once again at the center of political discussion in Kamukunji as early conversations around the 2027 elections begin to take shape. Speaking during an interview on Political Ringside, Deacon Ochieng shared why he believes many residents still see Mbugua as a strong and capable leader for the constituency.

During the discussion with host Kevin Waswa, Deacon described Mbugua as a leader deeply rooted in Kamukunji. He pointed out that Mbugua has served the area before, first between 2007 and 2011, and later from 2017 to 2022.

In addition to his time as Member of Parliament, Mbugua also served in the East African Legislative Assembly, where he gained broader experience in handling regional matters and governance issues beyond the constituency level.

Deacon emphasized that Mbugua’s leadership was practical and visible. He said that during his time in office, improvements were seen in infrastructure, including better roads and the installation of streetlights in areas such as Pumwani Ward. These efforts, according to him, helped address insecurity and made daily life easier for residents.

He also highlighted Mbugua’s role in protecting the Kamukunji based milk market from being taken over, ensuring that it continues to serve local traders and families. This protective approach is what has earned Mbugua the nickname “Simba” among some residents.

Even outside public office, Deacon noted that Mbugua has remained active through the Simon Mbugua Foundation. The foundation supports education by assisting over 200 students each month, from primary school to university level. Unlike many funding programs, the support does not require repayment, which Deacon said shows a genuine commitment to long-term community development.

Youth empowerment was another key point raised during the interview. Deacon explained that various programs have been introduced to help young people gain skills and income opportunities. These include sponsorship for driving courses at institutions like AA Driving School, as well as initiatives that enable youth to venture into businesses such as transport and small-scale enterprises.

The aim, he said, is to equip young people with practical skills that can sustain them over time.

Community cleanliness and involvement have also been part of these efforts. In the five wards of Kamukunji, residents have participated in organized clean-up activities, sometimes receiving small payments for their work.

This has encouraged a sense of responsibility and collective effort in maintaining a clean environment.

Support for vulnerable groups has not been left out. Programs targeting senior citizens and people living with disabilities have been introduced, including activities like wheelchair basketball and inclusive community events. According to Deacon, this ensures that development reaches all members of society.

On politics, Deacon downplayed the importance of party affiliation. He said what matters most is leadership and results, whether Mbugua runs under Jubilee, UDA, or as an independent candidate. He also referenced past political decisions, noting that lessons have been learned and that grassroots support remains strong.

Mbugua’s current role as chairman of the Kenya Compensation Policy Fund since May 2023 was also mentioned as a sign of continued public service. Deacon said his leadership there has focused on restoring accountability and proper management of resources.

As the conversation unfolded, the idea of reclaiming Kamukunji stood out. Deacon argued that many residents feel the constituency has lost momentum and that there is a need to return to a more active and responsive leadership style.

He believes Mbugua’s mix of experience and ongoing community engagement puts him in a strong position.

With the 2027 elections still some time away, it is clear that political conversations in Kamukunji are already taking shape. Interviews like this one are helping residents reflect on past leadership and consider what they want moving forward.

Simon Mbugua remains a key figure in these discussions, with his supporters confident that his track record and continued presence on the ground will influence the final decision when voters head to the ballot.
