Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi, once a vocal critic but now a staunch supporter of President William Ruto, has stirred mixed reactions online with his recent comments following the President’s disclosure of his first salary.
During a tour in Eldoret, President Ruto revealed that his first salary was Kshs 300 and that he bought his first pair of new shoes in 1981. This humble beginning has drawn considerable attention, including from Ngunyi, who took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to share his reflections.
In his post, Ngunyi commended Ruto, stating, “Ruto has a beautiful SOUL. He wore his first pair of SHOES in 1981 as he told us in Eldoret. I was about to enter University. He has come from FAR. There is something about this simple soul we have NOT studied as a Nation. And maybe when we do, we will understand him. Should we?”
Ngunyi’s remarks have ignited a wave of reactions among Kenyans. While some have praised him for defending Ruto and recognising his humble origins, others have criticised Ngunyi, accusing him of sycophancy.
The debate has intensified, with many questioning whether Ngunyi’s newfound support for Ruto is sincere or driven by ulterior motives.
This comes at a time when President Ruto is facing criticism for not addressing some of the key promises made during the 2022 election campaign.
Despite the backlash, Ngunyi’s comments have added a new dimension to the ongoing political discourse, leaving Kenyans to ponder whether they truly understand the man leading their nation.
As the discussion unfolds, it remains to be seen how Ngunyi’s defence will influence public opinion on President Ruto’s leadership.
During the day, Pres William Ruto and his Deputy President Hon Rigathi Gachagua alongside other senior govt officials presided over the elevation of Eldoret town to a city status, becoming the fifth town to be elevated.
