A senior official at the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), Eng. Jackson Magondu, is at the center of a growing scandal involving corruption and abuse of power.
According to the leaked reports by blogger Cyprian Nyakundi on X on August 22, Magondu, who previously served as Deputy Director-General, has been implicated in numerous corruption schemes and alleged sexual exploitation in exchange for employment.
Magondu, reportedly under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), was demoted from his position following allegations that he demanded sexual favors from job seekers in exchange for employment opportunities.
The scandal extends to accusations of his involvement in irregular tender awards, with reports suggesting that he defrauded the agency, contractors, and the government through kickbacks.
One of the firms implicated in these irregularities is said to be linked to Magondu’s secret lover, raising further concerns about the integrity of the tender processes under his oversight.
Magondu, who oversaw the ‘Roads 10,000KM Programme’ as the head of KeRRA’s Special Projects Department, is accused of exploiting the tender processes to amass significant wealth. Contractors vying for projects reportedly had to agree to pay substantial monthly bribes, with additional payments required for the approval of payment certificates.
Despite the serious allegations, Magondu remains a controversial figure, with many questioning how he continues to evade legal repercussions. This comes in stark contrast to his “twin sister,” Margaret Wanja Muthui, a former KeRRA manager who was successfully charged and had her property seized by the state in 2023.
Magondu’s lavish lifestyle, flaunted through his numerous properties in Nairobi and Mombasa, has only fueled public outrage and calls for accountability in the road development sector.
