Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua subtly criticized Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah for publicly airing Mount Kenya’s issues during President William Ruto’s recent tour of Nyanza.

Speaking at a church service in Meru on Sunday, September 1, 2024, Gachagua urged leaders to handle regional matters internally, emphasizing the importance of preserving community dignity.

Without directly naming Ichung’wah, Gachagua used an analogy, comparing the situation to a man exposing his disabled mother’s weaknesses to impress his mother-in-law. He stressed that leaders should not air their community’s dirty laundry for political gain at the expense of regional interests.

“I want to ask our young leaders to be measured when they speak about their community when they are outside with visitors,” Gachagua stated.

Ichung’wah’s controversial remarks were made during Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi’s homecoming in Siaya County. He accused Mount Kenya leaders of being ungrateful for the Cabinet positions allocated to them, questioning their loyalty and gratitude.

In response, Gachagua defended the Mount Kenya region, asserting that the community is appreciative of the positions given by President Ruto and dismissing Ichung’wah’s claims. Gachagua emphasized that the region merits the positions because of its significant support for the government.

“The dignity of this region is paramount, and as a community, it is important we be respected,” Gachagua added.

Gachagua’s comments highlight ongoing tensions within the ruling party as leaders navigate regional and national interests. The exchange reflects the delicate balance of power and the challenges of maintaining unity within the coalition.
