Bishop Charles Muturi of the Anglican Church of Kenya Mt Kenya South Diocese has declined a job offer from the Kiambu County government. Governor Kimani Wamatangi had appointed him to the Kabete municipal council board, but Bishop Muturi has opted to step away from the opportunity.

The decision was communicated through a letter from the diocesan administrative secretary to the clerk of the Kiambu County Assembly. The letter cited ecclesiastical rules that prohibit a sitting bishop from holding a public office. Accordingly, Bishop Muturi politely declined to submit his documents or appear before the assembly committee for vetting.

The news of Bishop Muturi’s rejection has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans. While some have saluted him for upholding the integrity of his position and avoiding entanglement with the Kiambu County government, others have criticized him for not accepting the job, especially considering his support for the UDA party during the 2022 campaigns.

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangw’a commended the bishop for his decision and urged the governor’s office to seek alternative candidates for the role. He emphasized the need to tap into the talent pool within the church community and beyond to identify a suitable candidate.

“Kiambu County is home to many unemployed graduates and young professionals who possess the skills and dedication required for such positions,” Senator Thangw’a stated.

Despite the differing opinions on Bishop Muturi’s decision, there is widespread acknowledgment of his significant contributions to the community. He has been praised for his efforts to uplift the youth, combat illicit brews and drug abuse, and promote development within the church and the country at large.

As the news continues to circulate, attention now turns to the Kiambu County government as they seek to fill the vacant position on the Kabete municipal council board. The decision-making process will undoubtedly be closely watched by residents and stakeholders alike.
