Kisii County Governor Simba Arati has urged President William Ruto to consider merging with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in Kondele, Kisumu County, Arati emphasized that Ruto, as one of ODM’s founding members, should look no further than ODM for support in the next election.

Arati expressed gratitude towards Ruto for his continued backing of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Chairmanship (AUC).

“Ruto was among the first founders of ODM. We have toured the entire Nyanza region, and they have agreed that when 2027 comes, he should not struggle much; he should join forces with ODM. We welcome you to the party, Mr. President, because you are one of us,” Arati said in Kiswahili.

In response, Ruto acknowledged that Kenya primarily has two significant political parties: United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM. He hinted at the possibility of merging UDA with ODM by 2027, signaling a potential shift in the country’s political landscape. Ruto also announced that ODM will no longer be in opposition in the next election, stating that the party would be part of the government.

Ruto praised Raila for his role in the anti-government protests, highlighting his dedication to the nation’s welfare. “Raila Odinga knows what is good for Kenya,” Ruto remarked, underscoring the importance of political stability in their collaboration.

This potential merger could mark a significant moment in Kenyan politics as the country prepares for the next general election.

Addressing residents in Ugunja, Siaya, the president said ODM will join the ruling party to form the government in three years.

“Hiyo uongozi wa upinzani, baada ya miaka mitatu, hiyo kiongozi ya upinzani tutatafutia watu wengine kwa sababu sisi wote tutakuwa tuko upande wa serikali,” Ruto said.
