Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to speak to the media on Sunday evening amid rising political tension across the country, a move that has attracted national attention as many Kenyans wait to hear his position on recent events.
Gachagua has invited the public to watch him live on Inooro TV during the Kiririmbi show, which will run from seven in the evening to ten at night. He shared the message through his official social media platforms, saying the program will give him a chance to speak directly to citizens and address key national issues.
According to him, the show will be an open space where Kenyans can better understand what is happening politically and what he stands for at this moment.
Many of his supporters have welcomed the announcement and say they expect him to speak honestly about the challenges facing the country. Others believe the interview will help calm tensions by allowing him to explain his views in his own words.
The appearance comes at a time when political emotions are high, especially within opposition circles.
The planned interview follows a dramatic visit by Gachagua and other opposition leaders to the office of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
A day before the interview, the leaders marched from Nairobi’s central business district to Jogoo House. During the visit, they demanded accountability from the police over repeated attacks on opposition figures during public events.
Among those who accompanied Gachagua were Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and several other senior opposition leaders. They accused the police of failing to protect political leaders and their supporters. They also claimed that acts of violence and intimidation were becoming more common and were not being dealt with firmly.
The meeting with the police leadership was prompted by chaos that broke out during a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County.
Gachagua was attending prayers when suspected goons disrupted the service. Tear gas was reportedly used, forcing worshippers and clergy to flee from the church compound. The incident shocked many residents and drew strong reactions from religious leaders.
Gachagua later blamed police officers who were present for failing to act in time. He said the disruption was a deliberate attempt to silence him and intimidate those who support him.
The incident added to public anger and raised fresh questions about security during political gatherings.
During a closed door meeting with the Inspector General, opposition leaders issued a warning. They gave the police two weeks to identify and take action against those responsible for the attacks.
They said failure to do so would lead to nationwide protests. In response, the police chief called for cooperation and dialogue, saying it was the best way to maintain peace. His office later acknowledged the concerns raised.
On the same day as the television interview, Gachagua is also expected to attend a public forum in Othaya town. He will be joined by other opposition figures, including former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. The event is being viewed as a strong political statement.
The Kiririmbi show is expected to focus on these developments, including Gachagua’s impeachment fallout with President William Ruto and his future political plans.
Gachagua being a key voice in the Mt Kenya region, his remarks are likely to influence public opinion.
