Two robbery suspects have been arrested in Kisumu after detectives pursued a black Toyota Prado linked to a reported theft of mobile phones in the town and its surrounding areas.

The suspects, identified as William Onyango Odhiambo and Felix Owino Onyango, were arrested after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into an electric pole near Oile Park following a police chase.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation began after a woman reported that she and her friends had been robbed of five mobile phones by individuals travelling in a black Toyota Prado.

Kisumu Central detectives launched investigations after receiving information linking the vehicle to the reported robbery. Their search led them to a Toyota Prado bearing registration number KDX 642Y.

However, the driver allegedly ignored police orders to stop and accelerated, prompting detectives to pursue the vehicle through the town.

The chase continued until officers fired at the vehicle’s tyres after the driver refused to stop. The tyres were punctured near Oile Park, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle crashed into an electric pole.

The impact damaged the front-right side of the Prado, ending the attempted escape.

Detectives subsequently arrested the two occupants as they attempted to flee from the wreckage.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a black pistol and three mobile phones, which were taken as exhibits to support the ongoing investigations.

The DCI said detectives were investigating the suspects’ possible links to a series of robberies in Kisumu and its environs, including suspected cross-border criminal activities.

The two suspects remain in police custody as officers complete the necessary procedures ahead of their arraignment in court.

Investigations are ongoing as detectives seek to establish whether the suspects were involved in other robbery incidents reported in the area.
