The legal community in Kenya is entering a period of transition as preparations begin for the Law Society of Kenya’s (LSK) 2026 elections, which will usher in a new team of leaders.

A formal notice sent to members announced that the elections will be held in February 2026, marking the start of a closely watched contest for control of one of the country’s most influential professional bodies. The elections will follow the guidelines set under the Law Society of Kenya Act, 2014, and the General Regulations of 2020, ensuring that all processes are transparent and in line with the society’s constitution.

According to the communication from the LSK secretariat, several leadership positions will fall vacant, including those of President, Vice President, and three representatives of the general membership.

The rules require that one of these general representatives must be an advocate who has practiced law for at least 25 years. This provision is intended to bring experience and stability to the council’s leadership. The society also reminded members that nominations will open well in advance to allow adequate preparation and ensure that the elections are competitive and credible.

Current president Faith Odhiambo, who took office in March 2024, is set to complete her two-year term in March 2026. Her deputy, Mwaura Kabata, is widely expected to contest the top seat once nominations open later this year.

The existing LSK Council comprises three Nairobi representatives, four from upcountry, and one from the Coast region, all elected in 2024 to serve until 2026.

The early notice issued by the secretary fulfills the society’s requirement of announcing the elections at least three months before the voting date, allowing members sufficient time to organize campaigns and submit nominations.

Faith Odhiambo’s tenure has been a mix of bold leadership and controversy. She first gained national attention in 2024 when she led the society in defending victims of police brutality during the Gen Z protests.

Her fearless approach earned her widespread praise from human rights defenders and the public. Under her leadership, the LSK became more vocal on issues of governance, judicial independence, and transparency in state appointments, cementing its position as a strong defender of the rule of law.

However, her decision to accept President William Ruto’s appointment to a government task force on police brutality compensation later created divisions within the legal fraternity.

Critics, led by advocate Levi Munyeri, accused her of compromising the society’s independence and demanded her resignation. In response, Odhiambo defended her involvement, arguing that her participation served the broader public interest and aligned with LSK’s mission to promote justice.

After weeks of internal pressure, she eventually resigned from the panel, stating that her decision was made to preserve the unity and integrity of the institution.

Despite the controversies, Odhiambo’s leadership has left a lasting mark. Her supporters view her as a reformist who modernized the society’s operations and amplified its influence in national debates. Her critics, on the other hand, argue that her approach sometimes blurred the line between activism and institutional neutrality.

The upcoming race is expected to pit reformists who wish to continue Odhiambo’s legacy against conservatives who advocate for a more traditional and neutral LSK.

Key campaign themes are likely to revolve around accountability, transparency, and protecting advocates’ independence in the face of political influence.

Whoever succeeds Faith Odhiambo will inherit both the successes and the challenges of her administration.
