What was meant to be a simple county trip to Zanzibar has now turned into a scandal involving Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri, bringing to light allegations of sexual misconduct, favoritism, and a breakdown of professionalism at City Hall.

At the center of the matter are two women, Kellen Muna, who recently moved from a junior protocol position to become Muchiri’s personal assistant, and Peris Macharia, the office secretary. Both are said to be in conflict, reportedly competing for Muchiri’s attention and influence.

One senior officer described the situation as “no longer about service to the public, but about who sits closest to the DG.” Muna, who was not on the official list for the Zanzibar trip, still made her way there at her own expense, raising concerns about her reasons.

Macharia, who was part of the official delegation, reportedly had open clashes with Muna, creating a tense environment that overshadowed the purpose of the mission.

Staff members described the trip as embarrassing, with focus shifting from official duty to personal rivalries.

Muchiri’s choice to replace longtime aide Solomon Kuria with Muna has also raised dissatisfaction. Kuria, who now plays a minimal role, is said to be frustrated.

One insider noted that Muna’s promotion was not about performance but about personal ties. Many staff members share the same feeling, pointing to favoritism, poor management, and moral compromise under Muchiri’s leadership.

Allegations of harassment and abuse have also surfaced.

A former officer identified as “Too” accused Muchiri of verbal abuse, arriving at work drunk, and making inappropriate remarks. He claims he was dismissed after questioning the DG’s behavior.

Though City Hall has stayed quiet, testimonies suggest an office controlled by fear, favoritism, and division.

Civil groups are now calling on the EACC and PSC to investigate the claims, saying they amount to misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public service ethics.

Governance advocate Jane Wanjiru stressed that Nairobi residents deserve leaders of integrity, not those trapped in personal rivalries.

The scandal comes at a time when Nairobi is already struggling with waste, poor planning, and transport issues.

Critics fear that leadership distractions are affecting the county’s responsibilities.

With growing pressure and more insiders speaking out, Deputy Governor Muchiri could face not only public criticism but also legal action. His office has so far declined to comment.

What is clear, however, is that the issues in his office have gone beyond private affairs and are now a matter of public accountability.
