Molo MP Kuria Kimani has stepped forward in support of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amidst the recent controversy surrounding additional funding for his office in the upcoming financial year.
The Deputy President’s office has requested a substantial sum of Sh2.6 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25. On Thursday, Kimani, who also chairs the National Assembly Finance and Planning Committee, emphasized the importance of adequately funding the Deputy President’s office to fulfill its constitutional duties.

“The renovations are crucial because the Deputy President’s office is a constitutional entity and must be properly equipped to carry out its responsibilities,” remarked Kimani.
Despite acknowledging the need for adequate funding, Kimani expressed confidence that Parliament would prioritize allocations that serve the interests of Kenyans.
“I am confident that Parliament will rise to the occasion and prioritize matters that are essential for the welfare of Kenyans,” he affirmed.

Responding to reports of extravagant renovation costs, Deputy President Gachagua clarified that his office had requested only Sh300 million for renovations, including refurbishing his offices and official residences in Karen and Mombasa.
“The request for Sh300 million is meant for the renovation of the Harambee House Annex Office, Official Residence in Karen, and the Official Residence in Mombasa,” clarified the Deputy President.
He explained that neglect over the past 15 years had severely impacted the habitability, safety, and security of these properties.

In addition to renovation costs, the Deputy President’s office has earmarked Sh1.12 billion for refurbishments, including Sh460 million for the Harambee Annex and Sh660 million for the Karen residences.
The remaining funds comprise Sh1.48 billion, allocated for various purposes such as the acquisition of motor vehicles, implementation of substance abuse programs, and procurement of medals and honors.
Other proposed expenditures include allocations for catering services, accommodation, conferences, and allowances for staff.

Amidst the ongoing debate over budget allocations, Deputy President Gachagua emphasized the necessity of modernizing his office to enhance service delivery, particularly in light of the reliance on outdated vehicles over the past decade.
As discussions continue within the parliamentary committee, the allocation of resources to the Deputy President’s office remains a subject of scrutiny and deliberation.
