Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has landed in hot water following a heated X exchange that saw him challenged over his alleged support for a series of controversial bills.

The row erupted after Sifuna flatly denied accusations of backing legislation deemed oppressive to Kenyans.

The confrontation began when X user, identified as Owichezzz, called out the senator, alleging double standards.

“Sifuna hungoja time ya masses ndio awadanganye ako side yenyu. Inside the walls anaSign oppressive bills with the government,” Owichezzz claimed.

Sifuna, clearly irritated, responded, “Mkuu tuekee list ya hizo oppressive Bills unasema nimesign. Kanisa imesema tuache uongo. Wewe na Zakayo hakuna tofauti,” demanding proof of the claims levelled against him.

The conversation took another turn when readers provided context, pointing out four recent bills Sifuna allegedly supported.

These were the Education Funding Model Bill passed on 18th October 2024, the Conflict of Interest Bill on 25th October, the Ndengu Bill on 1st November, and the SHIF Model on 8th November.

Each piece of legislation has drawn criticism, with many Kenyans viewing them as detrimental to their welfare.

The X spat comes hot on the heels of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s press briefing, where he lashed out at Members of Parliament for abandoning their constituents and pursuing self-interest.

Odinga’s remarks were largely interpreted as a jab at pro-government MPs, but Sifuna’s online defence suggests an even deeper rift within the political scene.

Sifuna’s heated exchange is a reflection of the heightened scrutiny facing lawmakers as Kenyans grow increasingly frustrated with their leaders. Whether his online rebuttal will quell or ignite more criticism remains to be seen.
