The leading Telecommunication company, Safaricom, has responded to Kenya Kwanza Alliance running mate and Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua’s alleged intentions to shut down the company and other major corporate firms.
Through a statement issued on Tuesday, 24th May, Safaricom condemned Gachagua’s remarks, citing that the company remains the most valuable firm in Eastern Africa and Mauritius by market capitalization.
“The running mate (Rigathi Gachagua) while appearing on a breakfast show in one of the leading vernacular radio stations, revealed intentions to take action that would interfere with our business operations and lead to shutting down of this company and other major corporate firms” the statement reads.
“We wish to condemn these remarks in the strongest terms and possible and also take this opportunity to inform the running mate and general public as follows a) Safaricom remains the most valuable firm in Eastern Africa and Mauritius by market capitalization with our £15.4B capitalization accounting for 49% if the market capitalization of the top 30 companies in the region” part of the statement notes.
The company also hinted that it has directly employed 5,500 people, 500,000 indirectly and 247,000 agents.
Safaricom also noted that its corporate social responsibility through Safaricom Foundation is present in 47 counties and has so far invested in 2,773 projects at a cost of Ksh3.5B impacting 5 million Kenyans.
