Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has made it clear that he will not run for re-election in the 2027 general election. Wamumbi, who is in his first term as a Member of Parliament, was elected on President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.

In a video shared on X, he told the people of Mathira that he has no plans to seek any other political position either.

He explained that his focus now is on delivering the promises he made to his constituents during the election, rather than looking for another political role.

“I will not run for MP in 2027. I am not interested in any position. My focus now is to work for you. My aim is to bring the development projects I promised. Let’s continue working together and supporting President Ruto and his government,” Wamumbi said.

Wamumbi, who took over from Rigathi Gachagua as the MP for Mathira in 2022, has often criticized the former deputy president. Before being elected as MP, Wamumbi served as an MCA for Konyu in the Nyeri County Assembly between 2017 and 2022.

Wamumbi played a significant role in the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua in 2024, alongside other lawmakers from Mt Kenya. The impeachment motion, which was led by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, caused a lot of tension in the region.

After the impeachment, some residents of Mathira started a petition to recall Wamumbi. They claimed that he betrayed Gachagua by voting for the impeachment and accused him of misusing the National Government Constituency Fund (NG-CDF). They also said that Wamumbi had neglected development projects in the area since he became MP.

Despite these accusations, Wamumbi has continued to stand by his decision to support President Ruto. He said that some people, including Gachagua and his supporters, have been trying to turn the people of Mt Kenya against the government. Wamumbi believes that the current government is focused on the needs of Kenyans and he is committed to helping President Ruto achieve his vision.

“We have a president committed to working day and night for Kenyans. Sadly, others are determined to fight him and his policies. This government like any other has had its teething problems and he has promised we will tackle them. I’m from Mathira and I have said I will stick with President Ruto. I will continue to support him. There are many of us in the mountain who support him together with his deputy, Kindiki,” he added.

Wamumbi’s decision not to seek re-election has surprised many, as it marks a shift from his previous political ambitions.

He has made it clear, however, that his main goal is to serve the people of Mathira and ensure that he delivers the development he promised. Even without seeking further political power, Wamumbi’s focus remains on the welfare of his constituents and backing the current government in its efforts to improve the country.
