The opposition camp has once again turned its attention to voter registration as a key weapon to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

During a church service in Kajiado County on Sunday, the United Opposition told Kenyans that change will only come through the ballot, and without mass registration of new voters their mission will remain out of reach.

Leaders from different parties stressed that the youth and the middle class will be the real game changers if they fully commit to the process.

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua underscored the urgency of participation, especially among young people, saying that they carry the future of the country on their shoulders.

“The exit of Kasongo (Ruto) will be done at the ballot box. The youth is the hope we have to save this country. The real transformation of our country will be done by the Gen Zs you have done well so far,” Gachagua noted.

He reminded Kenyans that the middle class has often chosen to stay away from voting, only to complain later when things go wrong. According to him, this group should stop being passive observers and instead play an active role in determining Kenya’s direction.

“The middle class in this country have been by standers in elections, they stay at home and wait for Kenyans to vote, when things go wrong like it has gone they are the victims. You cannot stay at home and wait for rest of Kenya to bring meaningful change,” he added.

Former Defense Cabinet Secretary and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa shared a similar position, claiming that Ruto’s administration has shown incompetence since it took power in 2022.

He said the country is still struggling with corruption, poor leadership, and police brutality against young people during protests. According to him, Kenya is not unique and one-term presidents have been rejected elsewhere.

“In Botswana President Masisi has also been sent home under one term. It has also happened in Nigeria and Ghana,” Wamalwa noted.

He urged the youth to begin registering immediately, saying that only mass participation will make Ruto a one-term leader.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka went further, declaring that President Ruto has lost the trust of the people. He criticized the decision to send Kenyan forces to Haiti under a peacekeeping mission, pointing out that lives have already been lost.

“Mr. Ruto we want our boys back home. There is no need to taking our children to die and this is being dsone agaisnt the decision of the Kenyan court,” noted Kalonzo.

The opposition leaders pledged to remain united despite attempts to divide them. They said their main goal is to remove Ruto from power in 2027 and restore the hopes of Kenyans. Former Deputy President Gachagua concluded that their focus is to end the current regime and usher in transformation.

Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is expected to roll out continuous voter registration on September 29 with a goal of capturing 70 percent of the youth, a group the opposition is counting on heavily to deliver change.
