A group of Mt Kenya leaders has strongly opposed the ongoing efforts by some allies of President William Ruto to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Prominent figures such as Murang’a Deputy Governor Stephen Munania, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, and Gatanga MP Edward Muriu voiced their staunch resistance against the proposed impeachment, which they view as a direct affront to the Mt Kenya region.

The leaders criticized those behind the impeachment plot, labeling it as a distraction from pressing national issues. “To my fellow parliamentarians, I urge you to focus on the issues affecting our people rather than getting caught up in personal vendettas,” said Chege. She emphasized that she will not participate in or support the impeachment proceedings, urging a shift towards constructive discussions in Parliament.

Chege also called on President Ruto’s administration to return to its foundational values. “Stop seeking solutions from individuals. Your foundation is in God, and He has the answers to our nation’s challenges,” she asserted.

Kihungi condemned the impeachment efforts as insensitive, citing backlash from his constituents. Meanwhile, Muriu encouraged Gachagua to remain resilient amidst the current political storm, emphasizing the need for strong leadership in these trying times.

The impeachment push against Gachagua stems from allegations of gross misconduct, undermining President Ruto, and involvement in funding Gen Z protests. This move has stirred significant controversy, with Mt Kenya leaders standing firm in their support for Gachagua and warning of potential unrest should the impeachment proceed.

Equally, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has received some unexpected boost  after Azimio co Principal Kalonzo Musyoka and Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni promised to back him in the event he is impeached.

Kalonzo said the Azimio MPs in parliament will oppose the impeachment motion when it is tabled in the National Assembly.

Speaking at the African Inland Church Milimani during a requiem mass for Mbaitu FM journalist Mercy Mawia Mwangi on Wednesday, Kalonzo said the Opposition will not not allow to be dragged in the ‘unnecessary fights.
