The Kenya Kwanza Alliance has split over the deputy president William Ruto’s recent campaign excursion to the mountain area, with a number of candidates who felt left out of the rally calling for an emergency meeting to discuss resigning. According to reports, vice president William Ruto’s mount Kenya allies in the UDA party have started discriminating against other contestants from other Kenya Kwanza Alliance parties.
Aspirants not affiliated with the UDA but affiliated with the Kenya Kwanza party were allegedly discriminated against during Ruto’s recent Mount Kenya tour, with some being denied opportunities to speak at rallies.
During the rally, UDA national leaders and heavyweights were completely focused on campaigning for UDA aspirants, thereby blocking other aspirants from speaking to the crowds.
Aspirants from Mwangi Kiunjuri’s TSP party, who have accused UDA of insincerity, were the most affected. In an interview with Nation Africa, TSP Secretary General Mr Waithaka Kirika accused UDA of preaching water while drinking alcohol.
The hopefuls, the most of whom are from TSP, allege that the visit ruined their chances of winning because they were represented as not belonging to Kenya Kwanza. As a result, they’ve scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss leaving the alliance and determining their next steps.
Ngunjiri Wambugu, a Nyeri Town MP, has broken the quiet, alleging that Deputy President William Ruto made a major error in picking Gachagua as his running partner ahead of the 2022 elections, which could derail his presidential bid. He claims that UDA leaders from the Mt Kenya region do not trust him because they rejected him while voting for Senator Kithure Kindiki of Tharaka Nithi County.
