Kenya’s political scene is set for an important change after confirmation that the cooperation agreement between the Orange Democratic Movement and the United Democratic Alliance will officially come to an end on March 7 this year.
The announcement has drawn attention from across the country because it affects two of the most influential political groups in Kenya today.
The statement was made by Siaya Governor James Orengo, who confirmed that the working relationship between the two parties would expire as planned. His remarks have been widely discussed, as they signal the close of an agreement that had generated both support and criticism since it was formed.
For many Kenyans, the cooperation was seen as unusual given the long history of rivalry between the two sides.
The agreement was originally understood as a practical step meant to reduce political tension and allow dialogue between opposing camps. At a time when the country was experiencing strong political divisions, the arrangement was viewed by some observers as a way to stabilize the situation and promote calm engagement on national issues.
Others, however, remained unsure about how long such cooperation could last, considering the parties’ different goals and political identities.
The Orange Democratic Movement, associated with veteran leaders such as Oburu Odinga, has for years played the role of a strong opposition voice. It has often positioned itself as a watchdog on government actions and policies. On the other hand, the United Democratic Alliance is closely linked to the current administration led by President William Ruto.
This contrast made the partnership notable, as it brought together parties that usually compete directly for influence and public support.
Reactions to the cooperation have always been mixed. Supporters believed it allowed space for constructive conversations and helped reduce hostility in national politics. Critics argued that the agreement lacked a clear long-term vision and could confuse voters who expected firm opposition or firm support for government policies. With the agreement now nearing its end, those debates are resurfacing.
There’s a higher chance that the ODM-UDA partnership will continue considering the current relationship between ODM and UDA.
