Harriet Chiggai, the Presidential Advisor on Women’s Rights, has taken the lead in a campaign to educate boda boda operators in Kakamega County on their role in addressing gender-based violence (GBV).

The initiative, launched under the theme “Abiria Ni Mayai” (Passengers Are Fragile Like Eggs), aims to empower operators to prioritize client safety and become active allies in the fight against GBV, especially amid rising femicide cases in Kenya.

Speaking during the sensitization drive, Chiggai’s office representatives emphasized the importance of involving boda boda operators, noting that they interact daily with women, who make up 60% of their clientele.

“Boda boda riders are not just transporters; they are trusted members of their communities who can play a critical role in preventing and responding to GBV,” her message noted.

Over 1,000 operators from Kakamega County participated in the program, where they received protective gear, including locally manufactured helmets and reflector jackets, as well as training on how to respond to emergencies.

The initiative also focused on equipping riders with knowledge about GBV, encouraging them to report cases and support affected individuals within their communities.

Chiggai, who spearheaded the campaign in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), underscored the need to transform boda boda riders into safety ambassadors.

“This initiative is about creating a ripple effect of safety and support, starting with riders and extending to the wider community,” she noted.

The Kakamega County government echoed her sentiments, encouraging riders to form self-help groups to access financial resources and improve their livelihoods.
