Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu is in the eye of a storm following revelations that she is protecting and assisting the continued illegal stay of Nairobi County Attorney Lydiah Kwamboka.
Attorney Kwamboka shot into the limelight after a resident, Mr. John Mark Ojiambo accused the County Attorney of among other things, being in office irregularly, conflict of interest, and the fact that her practicing certificates had expired. The accusations prompted an investigation that gave a damning verdict on the conduct and qualifications of Ms Lydiah Kwamboka.
The committee chaired by Joseph Komu tabled its findings which established that indeed, Ms Kwamboka had contravened the Advocates Act and LSK statutes by practicing and purporting to practice without a valid certificate for the year 2020 and continuing to cost taxpayers unnecessary costs. The report also opened a pandora’s box on ethnicity allegedly perpetuated by Ms. Kwamboka in county appointments under her docket.
Kwamboka probed
The committee also found Kwamboka to have flouted public procurement procedures and recommended both her removal from office and the disengagement of the firms she had single-sourced for county jobs.
Following the damning findings and recommendations, members of the Nairobi County Assembly moved to overwhelmingly vote for the removal of Lydiah Kwamboka from office.
Immediately after the vote, and as is required by law, the speaker of the County Assembly, Hon. Benson Mutura wrote to the city-county governor Ann Kananu informing her of the decision of the county’s legislative arm. However, Governor Kananu not only went silent on the matter but has fought off legal attempts to have her enforce the decision.
Governor Kananu’s refusal to take the required action and formally fire Lydiah Kwamboka has raised both legal and moral questions on the reasons behind Ann Kananu’s apparent protection of an individual found culpable of abuse of office claims, financial impropriety, wanton nepotism among other misdeeds. Is Kananu a beneficiary of Kwamboka’s actions?
So intent has Governor Kananu been on defending Kwamboka that a Senate Committee began probing her links with the County Attorney who is in office illegally and according to sources privy to the ongoing investigations, there are reliable links to that effect.
Concerned Nairobi residents have taken to social media to call for Kwamboka’s immediate removal from officeÂ
