A Gazette Notice has finally confirmed that Deputy President-designate Kithure Kindiki will soon be sworn into office.
This comes on the heels of a High Court ruling, which vacated interim orders previously halting Kindiki’s assumption of office.
The court’s decision effectively allows Kenya’s National Assembly’s earlier vote to stand, enabling Kindiki’s formal transition to the role of Deputy President.

The Deputy President position had been vacant since October 17, 2024, following a Senate resolution that resulted in a constitutional change to the office.
On October 18, President appointed Professor Kithure Kindiki, PhD., E.G.H., nominating him as the new Deputy President.
This nomination was swiftly confirmed by the National Assembly through an affirmative vote in line with Article 149 of the Constitution.
However, this path to office faced obstacles when court cases were filed challenging Kindiki’s confirmation, leading to interim court orders that blocked the Deputy President-designate from assuming his new role.

On October 31, 2024, a three-judge bench of the High Court in Nairobi vacated these orders, thus clearing the way for Kindiki’s swearing-in.
As noted in the Gazette Notice, the Assumption of the Office of Deputy President Committee has been constituted, comprising members of the original Assumption of the Office of President Committee.
This group, led by Cabinet Secretary Mercy K. Wanjau, will oversee Kindiki’s formal assumption of duties, marking a new chapter in Kenya’s leadership.
Kindiki’s swearing-in is now set to proceed without further legal barriers, solidifying the National Assembly’s decision and affirming Kindiki’s role in Kenya’s executive leadership.
