Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri has been implicated in an alleged scheme to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a revelation that emerged following a late-night meeting in Mt Kenya. This news was unveiled by Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa on July 30, 2024, during a media interview.

Thang’wa accused Kiunjuri of being a central figure in the plot against Gachagua, suggesting that Kiunjuri’s recent statements were designed to lay the groundwork for the Deputy President’s removal.

“What Kiunjuri was doing was preparing the ground to impeach Gachagua,” Thang’wa stated. He further criticized Kiunjuri and other Mt Kenya leaders for what he perceives as a deliberate effort to destabilize the region’s political landscape.

According to Thang’wa, Kiunjuri had previously alleged that the people planning a coup against Gachagua were from Mt Kenya. The Senator warned that if the residents of the region had not been vigilant, the situation could have escalated into chaos.

Thang’wa also highlighted ongoing tensions between Gachagua and President William Ruto, asserting that some politicians are aggravating these conflicts instead of seeking resolution. He cautioned that attempting to impeach Gachagua could have dire consequences, given his significant mandate from over five million voters.

In his interview, Thang’wa emphasized the importance of regional unity, urging Mt Kenya leaders to support Gachagua rather than engage in internal power struggles. He concluded by suggesting that those plotting Gachagua’s ouster might be driven by personal ambitions, warning that any attempt to unseat him would be met with significant resistance.

The Senator’s comments reflect growing concerns about the stability of the political environment in Mt Kenya and the potential impact on national politics.
