Baby Nyla was found lifeless at Mama Lucy Hospital after being rushed there from St. Anthony Daycare in Umoja, where her mother had left her earlier that morning.

The mother had dropped her at the daycare at around 11 am before going to work.

She later received a call informing her that the baby was sick and that she should go to the hospital. When she asked what exactly was wrong, the call was ended. On arrival, she found her child cold and unresponsive.

The doctor who received the baby reportedly said she was suffering from anaemia, claiming her eyes looked pale. According to the family, no detailed examination or tests were done to confirm that conclusion.

The explanation did not fully address what could have caused such a sudden and serious condition within a few hours.

More details later emerged from the daycare.

A Form Three boy who helps at the facility told the family that Nyla had been bitten by another baby while there. He said she cried after the incident and later slept. When he went to check on her again, he noticed she was not okay and that white foam was coming out of her mouth.

He then rushed her to the hospital as he waited for his mother, who had stepped out for errands, to join him.

The family moved the baby’s body to the morgue as they prepared to transfer her to Nanyuki for burial.

The following day, at Cottage Hospital Funeral Home in Nanyuki, the mortician noticed visible bite marks on her body and advised the family to request a postmortem examination.

The postmortem findings were disturbing. The report showed that Nyla had seven deep bite wounds described as adult teeth marks.

It also revealed blunt force trauma to her head that had caused blood clots. In addition, there was internal bleeding from her buttocks.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were present during the postmortem.

Despite these findings, the family says no action has been taken so far. They are still waiting for investigations to move forward and for those responsible to be held accountable.
