Detectives are actively searching for Nairobi County official Boniface Nyamu following allegations of harassment and extortion against bar and nightclub owners.
This comes days after Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi exposed Nyamu’s misconduct on X (formerly Twitter), which led to widespread public outcry.
Nyamu, who was allegedly extorting businesses along Kiambu Road and in Kilimani under the pretense of enforcing county regulations, is now said to have gone into hiding.
Sources close to the investigation indicate that Nyamu switched off his phone after learning detectives were tracking his movements, fearing the notorious “Kamata Kamata Friday,” a term associated with the Kenya Police’s routine Friday arrests of corrupt individuals.
Nyamu’s actions, according to the whistleblower’s initial report, have left many bar owners frustrated and calling for justice. Some had accused him of demanding bribes in exchange for uninterrupted business operations.
The whistleblower also alleged that Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri had been shielding Nyamu, complicating any efforts to address the rampant corruption within the county.
Nyakundi’s exposé seems to have triggered investigative bodies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who are now pursuing Nyamu. The DCI is reportedly gathering more information from business owners who suffered under Nyamu’s extortion schemes.
While the official has gone silent and remains in hiding, affected bar owners are anxiously waiting for justice, hoping that Nyamu’s arrest will send a strong message to county officials who abuse their power for personal gain. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who had promised order in the city, is now facing increased pressure to clean up his administration.
The business community continues to urge investigative agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to fast-track their investigations and take swift action. Many are watching closely to see if this case will bring an end to the systemic corruption that has plagued Nairobi’s business landscape for years.
