In a bold declaration during his tour of the Mt Kenya region, the Deputy President has stated he is willing to sacrifice his political position to combat the sale of illicit alcohol in the area. Emphasizing his commitment to the cause, the Deputy President remarked, “Mimi sikuzaliwa kwa hii kiti ya Deputy President. Nimepata tu juzi, miaka hii ingine yote nimekuwa tu nakula, nakunywa na naendelea na mambo yangu. Sio lazima nikae hapo milele,” which translates to “I was not born into this seat of the Deputy President. I just got it recently, all these other years I’ve been eating, drinking, and going about my business. It’s not necessary for me to stay there forever.”

He continued, “Kama hii kiti ya itapotea kwa sababu nimesema watoto wetu wasiuziwe sumu niko tayari,” meaning “If this seat will be lost because I said our children should not be sold poison, I am ready.” This statement underscores his readiness to face any political consequences that may arise from his stance against the distribution of harmful illicit brews.

The Deputy President’s comments have sparked a conversation about the priorities of political leaders and the lengths they are willing to go to protect the welfare of their constituents. His willingness to potentially lose his position reflects a strong dedication to the fight against a pressing social issue that affects many families and communities throughout the Mt Kenya region.

This move has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising his dedication to social issues, while others question the political implications of his statement. Regardless, it is clear that the Deputy President is steadfast in his resolve to address the issue of illicit alcohol, even if it means risking his own political career.
