Patrick Mwangi, a 35-year-old businessman from Thika, Kenya, had a dream of having a big family with his wife, Kavira Zubeda, whom he married in 2019. However, his dream was shattered when he discovered that he was infertile due to a genetic condition.
“I was devastated when the doctor told me that I could not father a child. I felt like a failure and a burden to my wife. I wanted to give her the joy of motherhood, but I couldn’t,” Patrick said.
Patrick decided to turn to his best friend, James Njoroge, a 36-year-old engineer, to impregnate his wife. James, who was single and had no children, agreed to help his friend out of compassion and friendship.
“I have known Patrick since we were kids. We grew up together and shared everything. He is like a brother to me. When he asked me to do this for him, I did not hesitate. I wanted to make him happy and fulfill his wish,” James said.
Zubeda, however, was hesitant at first. She said she loved her husband and did not want to betray him or their marriage vows. She also feared how the society would judge her and her children.
“It was not an easy decision for me. I felt guilty and conflicted. But I saw how unhappy my husband was and how much he wanted to have a family. I decided to do it for him, for us. I prayed to God to give me the strength and the courage,” Zubeda said.
The trio agreed to keep their arrangement a secret and only told their close relatives and friends. Zubeda conceived three times with James’ help and gave birth to two boys and a girl, aged four, two and one respectively.
Patrick said he was overjoyed and grateful to have three children, whom he loves and treats as his own. He said he felt like a complete man, thanks to his friend, and that their bonds remained unshaken.
“I don’t care what people say or think. These are my children and I am their father. They have my name and my blood. I love them with all my heart and I will do anything for them. James is not only my best friend, but also my hero. He gave me the greatest gift of all. We are still very close and he is like an uncle to my kids,” Patrick said.
Zubeda said she was happy and content with her family and that she had no regrets. She said she respected and appreciated both Patrick and James for their sacrifice and generosity.
“I thank God for blessing me with three beautiful children. They are my pride and joy. I also thank my husband for his love and support. He is a wonderful man and a great father. I also thank James for his kindness and friendship. He is a good man and a good friend. We are one big happy family,” Zubeda said.
