National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has been accused of using threats in a bid to get his way in the upcoming Bungoma senatorial mini poll.
The seat fell vacant after he took over the leadership of the house from its former holder Justin Muturi, with a by-election now set to be held in December.
But UDA candidate for the seat Mwambu Mabonga has accused him of interfering, claiming that he has been sending threats to candidates.
Mabonga, the former Bumula MP, says that Wetangula wants his Ford Kenya candidate Wafula Wakoli elected, and has been threatening the others.
“Mr Speaker, you are the president of the National Assembly and you should be neutral when it comes to politics,” he said in Kimilili, reports The Star.
Mabonga has asked the Ford Kenya leader to keep off the by-election and let the people choose their next senator without being coerced.
He has further requested Wetangula to remain at his level as a senior politician in the county and cease engaging in behaviours relegating his status.
He has told him to emulate other politicians whose seats have also fell vacant but have promised not to interfere in the approaching mini elections.
“Political leaders such as Kipchumba Murkomen have said they will not interfere with elections in their areas, why is our speaker doing it here?” he is quoted.
