Politician Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her two children have been charged with the murder of city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in a case that also involves two police constables.
The five accused persons appeared before the Kibera High Court, where they denied the murder charge. They were arraigned before Lady Justice Diana Kavedza after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) brought the case against them.
Mbithe’s children, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa, are facing the charges alongside police constables Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi.
According to the particulars of the charge, the five accused persons, jointly with others who have not been brought before the court, murdered Mbobu on September 9, 2025. The incident allegedly took place at around 7:30 p.m. along Magadi Road in Karen, within Lang’ata Sub-County, Nairobi.
The latest case adds to the legal troubles facing Mbithe and her two children, who are also charged in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso. The new charge marks the second murder case involving the politician and her children.
Mbobu was a prominent advocate of the High Court, university lecturer and author before his death. His murder has led to investigations involving several individuals, including members of the police service.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution informed the court that it also intends to charge Police Inspector Kenneth Sang in connection with Mbobu’s murder.
Sang was arrested in Eldoret and presented before the Milimani Law Courts on Monday. The court allowed investigators to hold him for 14 days to give the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) time to complete its investigations.
His case is separate from the proceedings involving the five accused persons who have already been charged. The prosecution is expected to take further steps regarding Sang after the investigations are completed.
Meanwhile, the court directed the prosecution to file an affidavit opposing the accused persons’ release on bond. The document is expected to outline the prosecution’s reasons for opposing their release as the court considers the application.
The court scheduled November 24, 2026, for the hearing of the bond application.
The five accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The case will proceed as the court considers whether they should be released on bond while awaiting trial.
