Kenya braces for widespread rain as weather department issues 24 hour alert

Many parts of the country are expected to experience wet weather following a warning issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The advisory has raised concern among residents as rainfall is forecast to cover wide areas within a short period, affecting daily activities and movement, especially during the festive season when travel and outdoor plans are common.

The weather alert was shared on Sunday, December 28, 2025, and outlines rainfall expected over a 24-hour period.

According to the national weather agency, the forecast is valid from 9.00 am on December 28 to 9.00 am on December 29, 2025. During this time, rain is expected to fall in several regions across the country, both in towns and in rural areas.

The department noted that the rainfall is likely to be fairly widespread. This means that many counties could experience wet conditions at the same time. Such a pattern often increases the risk of flooding in areas that already struggle with poor drainage, especially in low-lying zones and settlements near rivers. The warning comes at a sensitive time when many families are travelling, attending social events, or spending time outdoors, making weather awareness important for safety and planning.

Urban areas are expected to feel the effects of the rain through heavy traffic, waterlogged roads, and difficulty for pedestrians. Cities like Nairobi often experience delays and disruptions when heavy rain falls, as some roads become impassable and public transport slows down. In rural areas, rain can damage earth roads, cut off villages, and affect farming activities, particularly where crops are already in the fields.

The advisory lists several regions that are likely to receive rainfall. These include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, covering areas such as Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coastal region.

The wide range of areas mentioned shows that the rain is not limited to one zone, increasing the number of people who may be affected.

Safety remains a key concern in the warning. The department has urged residents to stay alert, especially in places where rain may be heavy or continue for long hours. Past experiences have shown that such conditions can lead to flash floods, overflowing rivers, and damage to homes and property. Informal settlements and areas with weak drainage systems are often the most affected during such periods.

Residents are advised to take simple precautions, such as avoiding flooded roads, securing their homes, and keeping children away from fast-moving water. Those planning to travel are encouraged to check weather updates and allow extra time on the road. County authorities and emergency teams are also expected to remain on standby in case of incidents related to the rain.

Kenyans are encouraged to rely on official updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant agencies. Careful planning and awareness can help reduce risks and protect lives and property as the country experiences this expected spell of rainfall.
