Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment in Kochi, India.

Reports indicate that he collapsed during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital where he had been staying for care. Medical staff rushed to assist him, but despite their efforts, doctors at Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam confirmed that he had suffered a cardiac arrest. He was officially pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. Indian time.

His body has been preserved at the hospital as the necessary procedures and paperwork are being handled by both Kenyan and Indian authorities.

Raila Odinga had travelled to India accompanied by his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, who has been undergoing Ayurvedic treatment at Sreedhareeyam Hospital.

This is the same facility that previously helped her regain partial eyesight after she experienced serious health challenges. While Rosemary continued with her treatment, Raila Odinga was also reported to be receiving care at the Ayurvedic centre, where he followed a routine that included morning walks and therapeutic sessions meant to support his well-being.

It was during one of these walks that he reportedly collapsed, leading to the medical emergency that followed.

Following his death, Indian authorities notified the Foreigners Regional Registration Office to begin the official process of repatriation. This involves coordination between hospital officials, the Kenyan High Commission in India, and the relevant Indian government departments to ensure that all documentation is properly completed before his body can be transported back to Kenya.

The process also includes clearance for air travel and communication with Kenyan authorities to prepare for his arrival.

His daughter, who was still under treatment at the time of the incident, is reported to be working closely with both medical teams and diplomatic officials to manage the situation. The mood at the hospital is described as calm but heavy, as staff and officials ensure that protocol is followed with respect and dignity.

Back in Kenya, news of his passing has drawn public attention, with many awaiting official communication on the next steps regarding transport, reception, and possible public viewing once the body arrives.

At the moment, the focus remains on completing the repatriation process in a timely and respectful manner while close family members continue to stay at the medical facility in India.
