Agnes Kagure has continued to place herself at the center of Nairobi politics as she eyes the 2027 governorship race.
Having previously contested in 2022, she has been working to build stronger connections with grassroots communities, using sports and youth programs as her main platform. Through the Agnes Kagure Foundation, she has invested in football tournaments, sponsored local teams, and provided resources like uniforms and equipment, positioning herself as a leader who understands the challenges young people face.
By directly supporting teams such as Bunge FC, which recently lifted the County League Trophy, she has shown a keen interest in using sports to empower youth while at the same time strengthening her political base.
Her involvement in grassroots sports has been strategic. Nairobi has one of the highest numbers of unemployed young people, and many are searching for opportunities beyond education.
Kagure’s initiatives are seen as a response to these frustrations, offering young people not only a chance to play but also to gain visibility, mentorship, and discipline that may help them in life.
When Bunge FC made headlines for beating a governors’ team 5-0 during a devolution conference and later donating one million shillings to Harambee Stars, Kagure’s support for them became part of her political message that she stands for the empowerment of ordinary youth rather than elite interests.
She has also used these programs to reach communities at the ward level. Her donation of full football kits to Jacaranda Bunge FC sparked chants that mixed sports excitement with political undertones, showing how sports can be a tool for both unity and political mobilization.
This approach connects with her 2027 agenda, where she has openly said she wants to give young people not just playing fields but also a voice in leadership.
In addition to football, Kagure has spoken about broadening opportunities for other sports and mentoring youth who may not go professional but can learn key life skills through participation.
She aligns her work with Kenya’s broader sports development plan, but frames it more locally, promising that if elected governor in 2027, she will prioritize youth inclusion and invest more in community-driven projects.
Her involvement ensures visibility at events, where players lift trophies branded with her name and supporters rally around her message.
