The Kenyan police have confirmed the death of Samuel Musembi, the prime suspect in the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott, who died from a suspected suicide.
Musembi, who had been on the run, was found with a self-inflicted neck stab wound while hiding at a friend’s house in Dandora.
According to the police, Musembi was the driver who allegedly transported Scott’s body from Pipeline, Nairobi, to Makongo Forest in Makueni County.
Authorities revealed that Musembi’s friend left him in the house on Tuesday morning, only to return later and find the door locked from the inside.
After breaking in, he discovered Musembi lying on the bed, unconscious, with foam coming from his mouth and blood oozing from his neck.
Musembi was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Musembi first attempted to poison himself, but when the poison failed, he resorted to stabbing his neck.
Just days before his death, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had released images of three suspects, including Musembi, who were wanted in connection with the murder of Campbell Scott.
Scott, a senior director at FICO, had arrived in Nairobi on February 14 for a business conference. He was reported missing two days later and was found dead on February 22 by herders in Makongo Forest along the Wote-Machakos highway.
Emerging reports suggest that Scott fell victim to a criminal syndicate targeting wealthy foreigners through online dating platforms.
The gang reportedly lures victims using female accomplices, who set up fake romantic meetings, only for the victims to be ambushed, tortured for financial information, and in extreme cases, murdered.
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in Scott’s murder.
