In what is likely to now escalate political tension that was triggered by the 3-day demos by the Gen Z protesters, the Azimio opposition coalition has today demanded the immediate resignation of Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei.
This follows the tragic death of Rex Kanyike Masai, who was shot during peaceful demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024.
Leading the charge, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka decried the police’s violent response to unarmed protestors, calling for accountability from the highest ranks of the police force.
Musyoka, alongside other Azimio leaders, stressed that this incident is part of a troubling pattern of police brutality that must be addressed. He called on the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to charge Koome, Bungei, and the officer responsible for the shooting, highlighting the need for justice and institutional reform.

On his side, Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, issued a stern warning to the officer involved, suggesting that public outrage could lead to retribution if justice is not served. Owino’s comments underscore the high stakes and intense emotions surrounding the case, as citizens demand greater accountability and transparency from their leaders and law enforcement.
All the same, Footage of the incident, captured in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), has gone viral, fuelling public outcry and bolstering calls for reform. Azimio leaders have vowed to support Masai’s family in seeking justice and have pledged to pursue legal action against those responsible for the killing.
The Azimio coalition’s demands reflect broader concerns about systemic issues within Kenya’s police force. The incident has not only highlighted the urgent need for reforms but also intensified the public discourse on police conduct and human rights in the country. As the nation watches closely, the pressure mounts on Koome and Bungei to respond to the growing calls for their resignation.
