The Nairobi Business Community has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto and Deputy President Riggy Gachagua. The group, comprising influential traders from Nyamakima, has expressed their discontent with the current administration’s failure to fulfill promises made during the 2022 general election campaign.

The traders, who were instrumental in maintaining peace in Nairobi’s Central Business District during the opposition protests of 2017 and 2023, have declared that they are not lacking in options when it comes to the political landscape of 2027. They have cautioned that if the Kenya Kwanza Government does not address their grievances, they will be compelled to consider alternative political alliances as the next general election approaches.

The community’s frustrations stem from what they describe as the government’s inability to provide sufficient business space, the harsh enforcement tactics of county askaris, and the oppressive tax measures implemented by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). These issues, they argue, are hindering their ability to conduct business and thrive in the nation’s capital.

“We have been patient, and we have been supportive,” a spokesperson for the group stated during a press conference. “However, our patience has limits. We demand action, and we demand it now. If our concerns are not addressed, we will have no choice but to seek a leadership that will listen to us and act on our behalf.”

The Nairobi Business Community’s warning is a clear message to the Ruto administration that the business sector’s support is not unconditional. With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the group’s stance could signal a significant shift in the political dynamics of Kenya’s capital.
