The internal rift within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on August 21 on Monday appeared to have deepened after UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar publicly criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of overstepping his role.
In a press briefing, Omar reminded Gachagua that his role is to serve as President William Ruto’s principal assistant, not as a co-president.
Omar emphasized that Gachagua’s selection was a last-minute decision, and he should focus on supporting the president rather than acting independently. He also warned Gachagua that undermining the presidency could result in a loss of respect for his office.
Omar further challenged Gachagua to prepare for the 2027 elections if he is dissatisfied with his current role, hinting that his position could be contested.
In a related development, Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri accused Gachagua of trying to isolate the Mt Kenya region for personal political gain. Kiunjuri urged Mt Kenya leaders to remain united with the central administration despite Gachagua’s actions, accusing the DP of focusing on regional politics instead of supporting the implementation of the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s campaign promises.
The widening rift within UDA highlights the growing tensions between the party’s leadership and the Deputy President as they approach the 2027 elections.
UDA party wrangles aside, the second in command has been shadow boxing with Kiharu Member of Parliament Hon Ndindi Nyoro alongside other Mt Kenya region leaders who feel that Deputy President Hon Rigathi Gachagua shouldn’t be near President William Ruto’s corner.
Some leaders have been arguing that Deputy President Hon Rigathi Gachagua is to be blamed for the latest development that saw the Orange Democratic Movement Party leader Hon Raila Odinga’s men such as Hassan Joho join the govt.
Unconfirmed reports also indicate that Pres William Ruto a few weeks ago conducted a crisis meeting with Mt Kenya region leaders who he said that his Deputy President Hon Rigathi Gachagua had turned stubborn hence move to invite Raila Odinga to the govt.
